Dr. Andy Kenney and Forester Astrid Nielsen will lead you through the steps for identifying tree species, assessing tree health and mapping the location of trees in Champlain Park. The resulting inventory will show the economic value of trees to people due to energy conserved, stormwater filtered, air quality improved and carbon dioxide removed. And help the community retain its forest canopy.
The Workshop sessions take place on the following
Friday, June 3, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Saturday, June 4, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Sunday, June 5, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Participants must commit to attend at least 80% of the full workshop

This workshop has been organized under the Urban Forest and Green Space projects of Champlain Park
CPCA Environment Committee 
Friday we start our adventure with tree identification and mapping, starting at 7 pm Friday at the Champlain Park Field house (Cowley Avenue, in Westboro). 17 people have signed up.
Please bring things for personal needs such as notebook, water, sunscreen, insect repellent, good footwear, rain gear (as the weather indicates). A clipboard and tape measure might be helpful, but not necessary. Please also bring your registration fee ($20), in cash if possible.
Our instructors will provide a field manual for each person. The Champlain Park Community Association (CPCA) will provide refreshments and lunch for Saturday. Please bring your own lunch for Sunday (and let me know if you cannot stay for lunch).
Friday evening will be an (indoor) overview of the Neighbourwoods process, the general why and how of data collection. How can the data be used for urban forest stewardship?
Saturday and Sunday will be outside all day, rain or shine (unless a thunderstorm present a safety hazard). Saturday one group will work on species identification and the second the tree condition assessment protocol, tree size estimation, etc. In the afternoon we will switch groups and repeat the process.
On Sunday we will review material from Saturday and then volunteers will break into groups of 2 or 3 and assess trees in our neighbourhood, focusing on street trees.
